What are the students learning?

January/February 2017

Kindergarten: Kindergartners will be using the various tools to show the many ways they express themselves.  Students will be planning, writing and drawing themselves playing with their favorite toys, playing their favorite sport and/or a picture of their family.  They will then use these plans to create a cartoon using the Animationish software on the computers.

First Grade:  The first graders will be learning a new language! In addition to the many languages spoken at Sabin, First Graders will be learning the language of computers through coding and programming. Through partner work, students learn the essential skills of communication and collaboration to solve complex coding activities. We we utilizing the Code.org platform to support our learning.

Second Grade:  Sabin Second graders will be working through a design cycle process focusing on planning, building, revising and reflecting.  This process will have students planning for the construction of an object and be able to select the appropriate tool. They will then need to use their plans to build their object, then finally reflect on the whole process, and plan for improvements for the next time.  Students will be able to choose from the following building tools: Legos, Duplo, Lincoln Logs, Zometools, K’nex, Zoobs, Magnetix.

Third Grade: What is electricity? What are circuits?  Sabin 3rd graders are learning about elecricity and learning about circuits while visiting the SMARTLab.  Using Snap Circuit Kits, student work in collaborative groups to explore, build, design, and diagram electrical circuits.  We are focusing on the following 4 vocabulary terms: Load, Path, Flow Control Device/Switch and Power/Energy Source.  Ask your kids where these items are in your house!

Fourth/Fifth Grades: With the guidance from Mr. Alonso,  4th and 5th graders will be learning about the Scientific Method through conducting simple experiments using, safe, everyday ingredients found in the kitchen!  Sometimes the experiments have very few directions, forcing some students to ask many questions! Exactly what we want! Students are also learning how to analyze data using Vernier software and Technology.

Many of the activities that we will be working on also have resources added in the student’s Google Classroom accounts.  Students can log on to their account here – googlemail.dpsk12.net and show you where their SMARTLab Google Class is.

REMINDER: To log in, the username is the student’s id/lunch number, and their password is their 8-digit birthday.
